America’s Promise Alliance

America’s Promise Alliance was started at the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future in 1997. At that gathering in Philadelphia, Presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter and Ford (with Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan), challenged America to make children and youth a national priority. Retired General Colin L. Powell became the founding Chairman. Today, Alma Powell serves as Chair of the Alliance.
Our community became involved with the America’s Promise organization in the fall of 2005 when 4 organizations (Spfd Chamber, Burrell, Community Partnership, Mayor’s Commission for Children) jointly submitted an application to the 100 Best Communities for Young People.
Little did we know at the time just how significant this effort would become and the impact that the “5 Promises” would eventually have within our community.
The cool thing about the promises is that they are easy to understand, positively impact children, don’t have to cost a lot of money, and everyone can find a way to support at least one of them. They provide a wonderful mechanism to identify and unify the efforts of those who work to improve the lives of children.
